The route

Gandikota earns its “Grand Canyon of India” nickname honestly — the Pennar River has cut a genuinely dramatic gorge through the Erramala hills, best seen at sunrise or sunset when the red sandstone cliffs catch the light. The 13th-century fort above it, built by the Kalyani Chalukyas and later held by the Vijayanagara Empire and the Qutub Shahi kings, is worth exploring in its own right — the Ranganatha and Madhavaraya temples inside the fort walls have genuinely intricate carvings. Camping right on the cliff edge has become a popular way to spend the night here, with several operators running packages; the state-run Haritha Resort is the main proper accommodation option if camping isn’t your thing. Rock climbing, rappelling, and kayaking are all available if you want to make it a more active weekend.

Belum Caves, about 60km away, are worth the detour regardless of which direction you fit them into your route. Formed by an underground stream through black limestone over thousands of years, they’re the second-largest cave system in the Indian subcontinent, reaching around 150 feet deep at their lowest point, where you can still see the stream flowing. A 40-foot Buddha statue nearby rounds out the stop.
