Circuits

A 6-8 day self-drive loop from Ahmedabad through Bhuj, the White Rann of Kutch, and the 5,000-year-old Harappan city of Dholavira, timed around the Rann Utsav festival.

Duration

2 nights in Ahmedabad, 1-2 in Bhuj, 1-2 in Kutch, 1 in Dholavira — roughly 6-8 days total depending on pace.

Best time

November to February, timed around the Rann Utsav festival (the official season now runs into early March). Going right as it opens in November, or toward the end in February, means smaller crowds and lower prices than the peak middle stretch — this is when we went last, in February.

Budget

Ahmedabad has stay and food options at every budget. Bhuj has fewer options but is noticeably cheaper. Kutch and Dholavira have the fewest options of anywhere on this route — budget around ₹5,000/night (roughly $55/€45) for both, which typically includes all meals, since standalone restaurants are scarce out there.

Getting around

Rent a self-drive car in Ahmedabad and keep it for the whole loop — this route is built around having your own vehicle, especially for the Road to Heaven stretch.

A weekend circuit to Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) for Ajanta and Ellora's cave temples, Bibi ka Maqbara, and Daulatabad Fort — doable from Hyderabad by overnight train or from Mumbai as an even shorter weekend.

Duration

A single weekend — overnight train out, a full day covering Aurangabad and the Ellora cluster, a full day for Ajanta, overnight train back.

Best time

October to March, when temperatures are comfortable for a full day of sightseeing and cave-hopping. Summers here get genuinely hot.

Budget

Decent hotels start around ₹2,000/night (roughly $20/€18). A day's cab to Ellora ran ₹1,400 (roughly $15/€13), and to Ajanta ₹2,800 (roughly $30/€25) — this was in 2023, so expect current rates to be somewhat higher. Food runs ₹150-500 (roughly $2-5/€1-5) per person per meal.

Getting around

Overnight train between Hyderabad and Aurangabad each way, as we did it — Mumbai works as a closer alternative gateway (roughly 340km vs. 500km), with a same-day train, a short flight, or a road trip all realistic options too given the shorter distance. Locally, a day's cab to Ellora ran ₹1,400 (roughly $15/€13) and to Ajanta ₹2,800 (roughly $30/€25) (2023 rates).

A month in Bali combining remote work and slow travel — Ubud's waterfalls and temples, Amed's black-sand beaches and a night trek up Mount Agung, and Kuta's cliffside beaches, with Nusa Penida and the Gilis as further options.

Duration

A full month, as above, for genuine slow travel. This route compresses if needed, but the pace here was deliberate.

Best time

We visited in December, during Bali's wet season — worth researching current seasonal patterns for your own dates, since Bali's dry season (roughly April to October) generally offers more reliable weather for outdoor day trips.

Budget

We spent an average of ₹4,500 per person per day (roughly $54-55 at December 2022 exchange rates) — this covered flights, visa, stay, food and drinks, travel within the island, and entry tickets, essentially everything included.

Getting around

Airport to Ubud by cab. In and around Ubud we rented a scooter, which we also used for the ride out to Amed and back. Ubud to Kuta was another cab; in Kuta we rented a scooter again for all our days there. From Kuta, a final cab back to the airport.

The full tip-of-India loop from Chennai — Rameswaram, the abandoned coastline of Dhanushkodi, sunrise at Kanyakumari, and Madurai's temples — done on a genuine backpacker budget.

Duration

3-5 days on the ground across Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi, Kanyakumari, and Madurai, bookended by overnight trains from Chennai on both ends.

Best time

October to February — outside this window, the heat in this part of Tamil Nadu is a real factor.

Budget

This route was originally done for roughly ₹5,000 (roughly $55/€45) total on a tight backpacking budget. For more comfort without cutting the experience short, budget around ₹3,000 (roughly $30/€25) per day.

Getting around

Trains link every stop on this route — overnight from Chennai to Rameswaram, onward to Kanyakumari, then a local train via Nagercoil to Madurai, and back to Chennai from there.

A 5-10 day loop out of Siliguri through North Bengal's hill towns — Mirik, Darjeeling, and the often-overlooked Kalimpong — with an optional Sandakphu trek extension.

Duration

5-10 days (5 covers the core three towns, 7 for a slower pace, 9-10 with Sandakphu)

Best time

October to February, for clear mountain views and manageable temperatures.

Budget

Roughly ₹2,500-3,500 (roughly $25-35/€25-30) per day, covering stay, food, and local transport.

Getting around

Rent a scooty or motorbike in Siliguri and ride the loop yourself, or hire a car for the same route — the roads between towns are scenic but winding, and having your own wheels (two or four) makes stopping at viewpoints painless either way.

A long weekend from Delhi to Bir Billing for the hike, the paragliding flight, and back — built from an overnight bus, not a flight, though both options are covered.

Duration

5 days total, including the overnight bus journeys each way — 3 days on the ground covers the hike, camping, and the flight itself comfortably.

Best time

March to June for the most stable, warm paragliding winds; October-November is the other solid window. Avoid monsoon (July-September), when paragliding shuts down entirely.

Budget

Tandem paragliding flights run roughly ₹2,500-5,500 (roughly $25-60/€25-50) depending on duration and operator, with a standard 15-20 minute flight around ₹3,000 (roughly $30/€25). Add stay, food, and transport on top.

Getting around

Overnight bus from Delhi (Majnu Ka Tila or ISBT Kashmiri Gate) is the standard route, taking 11-13 hours to cover roughly 500km. If you're short on time, a flight to Gaggal/Kangra Airport (about 1.25 hours from Delhi) plus a 2-hour taxi to Bir is faster but pricier.

A weekend circuit to Gandikota's dramatic Pennar River gorge and the Belum Caves, doable equally well from Hyderabad or Bengaluru.

Duration

A weekend — either drive out Friday night or head out early Saturday morning, stay one night at Gandikota, and return Sunday.

Best time

October to February, when temperatures are pleasant enough for a full day outdoors. Summers in this part of Andhra Pradesh get genuinely harsh, with temperatures climbing well past 40°C.

Budget

Stay and food for two people can easily be done for under ₹5,000 (roughly $55/€45) for the whole trip — though you can spend considerably more if you want to.

Getting around

Self-drive works well from either city. From Bengaluru specifically, a train to Jammalamadugu followed by an 18km car/auto ride is also a realistic option if you'd rather not drive the whole way.

A weekend circuit to Hampi's UNESCO-listed Vijayanagara ruins and nearby Kishkindha, doable equally well from Hyderabad or Bengaluru/Bangalore by overnight train.

Duration

A single weekend — overnight train out, two full days in Hampi and Kishkindha, overnight train back.

Best time

October to February, for cool, pleasant weather well suited to a lot of walking among the ruins. Hampi sits in a semi-arid zone, so summers get genuinely hot.

Budget

Stays run upwards of ₹2,500/night (roughly $25/€25) for a double room. Food ranges ₹150-500 (roughly $2-5/€1-5) per person per meal. Local sightseeing is best done by auto-rickshaw (most people's preference) or cab.

Getting around

Overnight train from Hyderabad (Kacheguda/Secunderabad) to Hosapete/Hospet, roughly 380km — or a comparable overnight train from Bengaluru, roughly 350km, if starting there instead. A short auto ride covers the station-to-Hampi leg; local sightseeing around Hampi and the Kishkindha day trip is best done by auto-rickshaw or cab.

A self-drive weekend from Lucknow to the temples of Khajuraho and a jungle safari at Panna Tiger Reserve, with a stop at Kutni Dam on the way.

Duration

A long weekend — 3 days covers the drive, the temple complex, and a safari without rushing.

Best time

October to March. September and April are doable but genuinely hot. Panna's jungle safari is closed entirely during monsoon.

Budget

Decent stays with breakfast run around ₹3,000/night (roughly $30/€25) for a double room. For food, budget ₹300-500 (roughly $3-5/€3-5) per person per meal. See the ticket pricing tables below for temple entry and safari costs.

Getting around

Self-drive car for the whole loop — this route was done entirely that way, with no public transport legs.

A self-drive route from Lucknow across the Nepal border to Buddha's birthplace at Lumbini and a jungle safari at Bardiya National Park — best done as one longer trip or two separate weekends, not one rushed loop.

Duration

1 night each in Lumbini and Bardiya works if you're short on time, but 2 nights each — 4 nights on the ground total, as we did it ourselves — makes for a much less rushed trip, plus travel days on either side either way. This genuinely doesn't work well as a single rushed long weekend: the driving between stops is long enough that you'd likely arrive at both Lumbini and Bardiya in the evening or late evening, leaving little time to actually settle in. If you can't spare the full 4 nights, split it into two separate weekend trips from Lucknow instead — one covering Shravasti and Lumbini, the other covering Kapilvastu and Bardiya.

Best time

October to March. September and April are doable but genuinely hot. Bardiya's jungle safari is closed entirely during monsoon.

Budget

Decent double-occupancy stays run ₹2,000-3,000/night (roughly $20-30/€18-25). Lumbini and Kapilvastu, as major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, have a wide range — you can find both cheaper and more expensive options than that. Food runs ₹200-500 (roughly $2-5/€2-5) per person per meal. In Bardiya specifically, options are limited to homestays — there are few to no standalone hotels or restaurants, and meals typically come with the homestay itself.

Getting around

Self-drive car for the whole route, crossing the border by land.

A weekend circuit to Antwerp — doable from Metz, Paris, Amsterdam, or Luxembourg — with Billie's Bier Kafétaria for beer lovers, plus Brussels, Bruges, and Ghent all worth adding.

Duration

A weekend covers Antwerp itself comfortably. Extend to a long weekend if you want to add Brussels, Bruges, or Ghent.

Best time

Spring (March-May) or fall (September-October) — the shoulder seasons offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and cheaper rates than summer's peak pricing.

Budget

Around €80/night for a double hotel room, plus roughly €20 per person per meal.

Getting around

No direct train from Metz — you'll change at Luxembourg, with the full journey to Antwerp taking somewhat longer than the equivalent Brussels route given the extra distance north. This route also works well as a weekend trip from Amsterdam (roughly 1h15, direct — the fastest gateway by far), Paris (roughly 2 hours, direct), or Luxembourg (roughly 3.25-3.75 hours) — see the note below.

A weekend circuit to Brussels — doable from Metz, Paris, Amsterdam, or Luxembourg — with Delirium Café for beer lovers, plus Antwerp, Waterloo, Namur, Bruges, and Ghent all worth adding.

Duration

A weekend covers Brussels itself comfortably. Extend to a long weekend if you want to add Waterloo, Namur, Bruges, or Ghent.

Best time

Spring (March-May) or fall (September-October) — the shoulder seasons offer mild weather, fewer crowds, and cheaper rates than summer's peak pricing.

Budget

Around €80/night for a double hotel room, plus roughly €20 per person per meal. We got a Brussels Card for our two days, which covers free entry to around 47-49 museums and attractions across the city (we used it for about 5 places ourselves), with public transport available as an add-on option.

Getting around

No direct train from Metz — you'll change at Luxembourg. The full Metz-to-Brussels journey runs roughly 3.5-4.5 hours depending on connections. This route also works well as a weekend trip from Amsterdam (roughly 2 hours, direct), Paris (roughly 1h22, direct — the fastest gateway of them all), or Luxembourg (roughly 2.5-3 hours, direct) — see the note below.

A long weekend from Metz through Germany's Black Forest gateway, a day trip into Switzerland's tri-border city, and a night in Strasbourg on the way home.

Duration

A long weekend — 4-5 days covers the full loop comfortably.

Best time

Late spring through early autumn (May-September) is the sweet spot — June and September especially, for the same warm, reliable weather as peak summer with thinner crowds and better prices. Strasbourg's Christmas market makes a good case for a completely different December trip instead, though Freiburg and Basel turn cold and grey that time of year.

Budget

Roughly €80/day, covering intercity travel by bus, getting around each city on foot, and hostel stays. Cheaper is possible if you stay outside the city centers, and pricier options exist too — it depends on what kind of traveling you prefer.

Getting around

Bus from Metz to Freiburg, with a change in Strasbourg. Strasbourg itself is about 45 minutes from Metz by high-speed rail (Ouigo is worth booking) or roughly 2 hours by bus — worth having the Carte Avantage Adulte for this route; see our Metz post for why.

A short weekend from Metz to Reims — Champagne country, without necessarily catching a champagne house tour.

Duration

A weekend — 2 nights is enough to see the city properly.

Best time

Spring or fall — winter can close some of the region's biggest champagne-house draws.

Budget

Getting around

No direct train from Metz — expect one change, with the fastest connections running roughly 1-1.5 hours.

An off-the-beaten-path weekend from Metz through the French Ardennes — a genuinely massive fortress, a puppet-and-poetry town, and an accidental stop in near-deserted Longwy.

Duration

A full weekend — Friday evening to Sunday evening covers all three towns comfortably.

Best time

Spring or fall, same as the rest of this region. If you're drawn to Charleville-Mézières specifically for its puppet tradition, plan around the town's puppet festival dates.

Budget

Meals ran roughly €10-20 per person across this weekend, with pastries and coffee at typical regional prices. Worth having the Carte Avantage Adulte for this one — a weekend with this many train legs is exactly where it pays off (see our Metz post for details).

Getting around

Train from Metz via Thionville and Longuyon to Charleville-Mézières, roughly 2.5 hours, around €25/person one way. These trains run short (often two coaches) and are usually near-empty.

A weekend from Metz to Germany's oldest city, Trier, with real time to explore Luxembourg City on the way there or back — Roman ruins, a UNESCO old town, and the AntikenCard's four major sites.

Duration

A weekend — a few hours in Luxembourg City either on the way out or on the way back, two full nights in Trier.

Best time

Spring or early autumn — mild weather, and specifically better for avoiding the crowds that build up around Porta Nigra and Trier's other major sites later in the day and in peak summer.

Budget

Hotels run around €70/night. Food is roughly €15-20 per person per meal. For sightseeing in Trier, get the AntikenCard — €18 covers four major Roman sites (Porta Nigra, the Imperial Baths, the Barbara Baths, and the Roman Amphitheatre) plus the Landesmuseum, working out cheaper than paying for each individually.

Getting around

Luxembourg is under an hour from Metz by direct train. Trier is a short onward hop from Luxembourg. Luxembourg City works equally well as a stop on the way out or on the way back — pick whichever fits your energy levels better.

A 3-week loop through Northeast India's living root bridges, Loktak Lake's floating islands, and Mizoram's hill villages — genuinely off the beaten path, with real permit requirements most agencies don't cover well.

Duration

3 weeks for the full loop, given the number of day trips and the transit time between states.

Best time

October to April, avoiding the monsoon (roughly June-September) — Meghalaya in particular gets extreme rainfall in that window, and it affects road conditions throughout the route.

Budget

Hotels ran around ₹2,500/night (roughly $25/€25), with meals roughly ₹250-350 (roughly $3-4/€2-3) per person. Local transport is the one place this route gets expensive — cabs are pricier here than in most of India, largely due to limited local supply.

Getting around

Rent a scooty locally rather than relying on cabs for everything — this worked well in Shillong (covering all of Meghalaya's day trips) and in Imphal (for the Loktak day trip). In Aizawl, local taxis covered both day trips instead.

A flexible 7-14 day Rajasthan circuit through Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kumbhalgarh, Haldighati, and Udaipur — built to work for backpackers and palace-stay travelers alike.

Duration

8-15 days (8 covers the core route, 10 with Ajmer, up to 15 at a relaxed pace)

Best time

Mid-October to mid-March — outside this window, Rajasthan's heat makes fort-climbing and midday sightseeing genuinely rough.

Budget

₹500-800/day (roughly $5-8/€5-7) backpacking (stay, food, local transport) up to ₹50,000+/night (roughly $530+/€450+) at palace hotels like Umaid Bhawan Palace or the Taj Lake Palace — the same itinerary works at either end.

Getting around

Hire a car with driver for the whole loop, self-drive if you're comfortable with Indian road conditions, or do it by train and bus between each stop.

An 11-day Sri Lanka loop — Colombo to Mirissa's beaches, a Yala leopard safari, the Ella train, Kandy's Tooth Relic, and Dambulla's ancient cities, ending at a purpose-built airport-hotel for late flights.

Duration

11 days, as above.

Best time

Sri Lanka has two separate monsoon systems affecting different parts of this route differently — the southwest coast (Colombo, Mirissa, Galle) and the dry-zone interior (Yala, the cultural triangle) don't share the same ideal window. December to March is the best overall balance, giving good weather on the south coast while also sitting within Yala's better dry-season safari conditions.

Budget

The whole trip cost roughly ₹80,000 total, working out to about ₹6,500 per person per day (roughly $78 at August 2023 exchange rates) — this covered everything: flights, hotels, local travel, food, drinks, the different teas we picked up along the way, and every entry ticket. It can be done for less or considerably more; we stayed in 3-star-and-up hotels throughout, all with a swimming pool, most including breakfast.

Getting around

A mix of transport for every leg: local buses for Colombo–Mirissa, Kandy–Dambulla, and Dambulla–Negombo; a cab hired in Mirissa covered Mirissa–Tissamaharama–Ella, including the Buduruwagala stop; the Yala safari operator picked us up directly from the hotel; a local taxi covered the Dambulla day trips (Ibbankatuwa, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa); Galle was a local bus out with an Uber back to Mirissa; and Ella–Kandy was by the scenic train.

A boys' trip route through Thailand — Krabi to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, then north to Sukhothai's ruins, bookended by Bangkok.

Duration

8-9 days total, as above.

Best time

November to February for the most comfortable weather across the country. If you're building the trip around the Full Moon Party specifically, check the actual party date first — it's monthly, tied to the lunar calendar, independent of season.

Budget

Costs varied a lot by leg: quadruple-share rooms ran roughly THB 375-2,625 per person depending on the stop, food and drinks were THB 150-350 per person per meal, and inter-city transfers (bus, ferry, train, private transfers) ran roughly THB 400-1,700 per person per leg. A 24-night solo remote-work trip through Turkey — Istanbul's history, Gaziantep's gastronomy, Alanya's beaches, and Antalya's ancient ruins, with real budget numbers for every stop.

Best time

April-May or September-October for the best balance — comfortable temperatures for city sightseeing and remote work, with the coast still warm enough to swim by late spring. Summer (June-August) is hottest and most crowded, especially in Antalya and Alanya; winter is quiet but cold inland.

Budget

Turkey genuinely supports every budget — hostel stays run as low as $5/night, luxury all-inclusive resorts as high as $300/night. Outside Istanbul, a good 2-3 star hotel with breakfast runs around $50/night; in Istanbul itself, closer to $60-70/night. Food is cheap and good throughout. Watch for all-inclusive resort deals specifically — a 4-star all-inclusive in Alanya that would normally run $150+/night was found for under $40/night with the right timing.

Getting around

Intercity travel worked well by both bus (used for Gaziantep-Alanya and Alanya-Antalya) and flight (used for Istanbul-Gaziantep) — buses are a genuinely comfortable, reliable option for the shorter hops.

A 12-16 day loop through Vienna, a Bratislava day trip, Salzburg with Hallstatt, and Bohemia's spa towns and silver-mining history on the way to Prague.

Duration

12-16 days (roughly 12 at a tighter pace — 3 nights Vienna, 3 Salzburg, 2 České Budějovice, 1 Mariánské Lázně, 3 Prague — up to 15-16 with 6 nights in Prague)

Best time

Late spring through early autumn (roughly May-September) is the safe general answer for this region, for both Hallstatt and the spa towns — not yet confirmed against a specific season for this exact route.

Budget

We spent 14 nights/15 days on this route — including flights, stays, inter- and intra-city travel, food & drinks, and day trips, it came to roughly ₹10,000 per person per day on average. Cheaper is very possible on hostels or budget stays, pricier if you upgrade, but for a comfortable trip budget around that. 2-3 star hotels typically run about €80/night.

Getting around

Train connects the main city stops (Vienna, Salzburg, České Budějovice, Prague) directly; a car, guided tour, or local transit covers the day trips (Bratislava, Hallstatt, Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora) — a mix of both works well for this route.

A 14-night, north-to-south Vietnam route done right after the country reopened to tourists post-pandemic — Halong Bay, Hoi An's lantern-lit nights, Da Lat's cool hills, and the Mekong Delta.

Duration

14 nights / 15 days, as above — this is a full, unrushed circuit, not a compressed one.

Best time

Vietnam's climate varies significantly north to south, so timing depends on which end you weight more heavily — broadly, February to April balances all three regions reasonably well, avoiding the north's cold winter and central Vietnam's typhoon season (roughly September to December).

Budget

We spent an average of ₹6,000/day (roughly $75/€75 at the time) — this covered flights, stay, food and drinks, local and intercity travel, and visas, for comfort-level travel (neither budget nor luxury). Vietnam genuinely supports both a lower and a higher budget than this. We ate mostly vegetarian, which pushed food costs higher than they'd otherwise be — if you eat non-vegetarian, expect food to cost less.

Getting around

We were a group of four, which made rental cars for day trips noticeably cheaper per person than they'd be solo or in a pair — worth keeping in mind when budgeting this route for your own group size.
